The Grente Cross, located above the Grente Alm in Antholz Mittertal, is a popular launch site for paragliding and cross-country flights. Surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and known for its reliable thermals, it offers excellent conditions for taking to the skies.
Flights from here lead across an alpine landscape that provides an important habitat for a wide variety of wildlife. Many of these animals are sensitive to disturbance and depend on quiet areas, particularly at certain times of the year.
- Chamois–agile climbers
Female chamois give birth and care for their young in May and June. During this time, they are particularly sensitive to disturbance and need plenty of space and quiet. If startled, they may flee suddenly, which can be especially stressful and risky in steep mountain terrain.
- Golden eagles–majestic hunters
Golden eagles nest in quiet, rocky areas and spend several months raising their young. During the breeding season in spring and summer, it is particularly important to keep a safe distance from nesting areas. Frequent disturbance may cause the birds to stay away from their nests, making it more difficult to raise their young successfully.
- Roe deer and red deer–at home in the mountains
Roe deer and red deer live in alpine meadows, pastures, and mountain forests, where they find shelter and places to rest. When disturbed, they may leave these areas and seek refuge elsewhere. This is especially demanding in winter, when fleeing uses up valuable energy.
Flying here is a special way to experience the mountain landscape. By giving wildlife the space it needs and flying responsibly, pilots can help protect this remarkable natural environment and the animals that call it home.
Fly Responsibly
- Keep your distance: Never deliberately approach wild animals. Always give them plenty of space.
- Avoid circling above wildlife: Do not repeatedly circle over animals at low altitude.
- Take care near slopes: When searching for thermals, keep well away from rocky terrain, forest edges, and sensitive habitats.
- Avoid sensitive areas: Minimise disturbance around forests, woodland edges, and quiet mountain areas.
- Be mindful at sensitive times: Take particular care during the spring breeding season, in the early morning and evening, and throughout winter.
- If wildlife reacts to your presence: Move further away, gain altitude, and continue your flight.
