The mountain hike to the Rotwand summit (2,818 m) from the Staller Saddle is one of the most impressive summit tours in the Antholz Valley. This striking peak lies on the border between South Tyrol and East Tyrol and offers varied scenery and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
From the Staller Saddle (2,052 m) the trail first leads through the beautiful Agsttal valley, passing alpine meadows, streams and wide high-alpine landscapes. As you gain altitude, the terrain becomes more rugged and alpine, offering increasingly impressive views.
The final section to the summit follows a stony path and scree slope. At the Rotwand summit, hikers are rewarded with a spectacular 360-degree panorama over the Rieserferner Group, the Defereggen Alps, and even the Dolomites. The view down to the emerald-green Lake Antholz is particularly impressive and makes the ascent especially worthwhile.
The descent follows the same route back to the Staller Saddle.
An early start from Staller Saddle is highly recommended. In the morning, the weather in the high mountains is usually more stable and you can enjoy the ascent in a peaceful atmosphere. From the summit of Rotwand (2,818 m) you will often have particularly clear views of the surrounding peaks.
Plan enough time for your stay at the summit – the panorama is among the most impressive views in the region.
The starting point of the tour is the Staller Saddle (2,052 m). At the border crossing, follow the well-marked trail no. 7 towards Rotwand summit. The path initially climbs gently through the Agsttal valley, passing alpine meadows and following a stream that is crossed several times via small wooden bridges.
At the junction to Steinzgeralm hut, stay on trail no. 7 towards Rotwand summit. In a wide right-hand curve, the trail reaches a broad alpine basin, which you continue to follow uphill. The path gradually becomes steeper and finally leads to the Regelscharte, from where an impressive panorama of the surrounding mountains already opens up.
From here, the final section climbs more steeply over a stony path and scree slope to the summit of Rotwand (2,818 m). At the top, hikers are rewarded with magnificent views of the Rieserferner Group, the Defereggen Alps, as well as Lake Antholz and the Lake Obersee.
The descent follows the same route back to the Staller Saddle.
