Our Mountains. Our valley. Our Responsibility
Climate Change and Climate Adaptation

The Antholz Valley is a valuable natural habitat and living space. Our mountains, forests, and waters shape our valley and our quality of life. However, climate change presents us with new challenges – through rising temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events.

With the development of a climate change adaptation plan and the municipality’s climate plan, we are actively shaping this path with foresight. Risks are being analyzed, concrete measures defined, and the long-term resilience of our valley strengthened.

Only together can we secure the future of our valley – as a municipality, as businesses, as people who call this place home, and as guests who value and visit our valley.

How South Tyrol is Changing
CURRENT CLIMATE DATA

Climate change is already noticeably affecting our region: mild winters, hot summers, and irregular precipitation. These developments impact snow reliability, water resources, flora and fauna, as well as tourism offerings.

  • +2,1 °C temperature increase since 1980
  • Increase in heavy rainfall days
  • Longer summer drought periods
  • Decline in snow depth below 1,500 m
  • Increase in heatwaves and tropical nights
  • Higher risk of debris flows, landslides and windthrow events

What does this mean for your holiday?
CLIMATE CHANGE

The mountains remain a special place to relax – even as the seasons change. Winter tends to bring less snow, but it also creates opportunities for new nature-based experiences and peaceful breaks in the clear mountain air. At the same time, spring, summer, and autumn are becoming longer – ideal for those seeking a conscious “coolcation” in the mountains.

Therefore, it is more important than ever that we all do our part – by treating nature with care, conserving resources, and consciously choosing sustainable services and mobility options.

Your Contribution to Protecting the Mountain World
TAKING RESPONSIBILITY TOGETHER

Even small changes in everyday life help to shape our region sustainably.

You too can play an active part:

  • Travel in an environmentally friendly way (e.g. by train, bus, or bicycle)
  • Use public transport at your destination
  • Use energy and water consciously
  • Shop regionally and seasonally
  • Avoid waste and dispose of it properly
  • Stay on marked trails
  • Respect nature, animals, and plants

Every mindful decision helps to preserve our mountain world in a sustainable way.

STRATEGIES FOR A RESILIENT AND FUTURE-ORIENTED DESTINATION

To actively address climate challenges, the destinations of Antholz Valley and Olang have jointly developed a climate change adaptation plan as well as an action plan. These define and prioritize key measures to ensure the region remains resilient and fit for the future in the long term.

Measures already implemented or currently in progress include:

  • Establishment of a Green Team
  • Reforestation projects and  biodiversity protection measures
  • Awareness-raising initiatives for accommodations and guests
  • Gradual implementation of our own events as certified Green Events
  • Development of sustainable tourism products (e.g. nature-based experiences)
  • Active visitor management and promotion of sustainable mobility

Further measures are continuously being developed and implemented in cooperation with municipalities, accommodations and local partners.

Municipal Climate Plan
TOGETHER ON THE CLIMATE PATH

At the same time, the Climate Plan of the Municipality of Rasen-Antholz defines concrete measures to reduce CO₂ emissions, strengthen sustainable forms of mobility, and increase energy efficiency. The goal is to actively prepare the Antholz Valley for climatic changes and to guide the region’s development in an environmentally and climate-friendly direction over the long term.

Roadmap
CLIMATE CHANGE ADAPTATION IN THE TOURISM SECTOR

Tourism in the Puster Valley – like in many Alpine regions – is facing growing climate-related challenges that affect both winter and summer tourism. Our roadmap outlines how we can address these changes in a forward-looking and determined way: with concrete measures, clearly defined responsibilities, and step-by-step implementation. It serves as a strategic guide for the sustainable, resilient, and future-oriented development of tourism.
